Stock Up On Ammo By The Case @ SGAmmo.com
In my opinion, if you need ammo, it would be wise to stock up now while summertime slow-season pricing still lingers in the retail market. We have seen reluctance from ammo manufacturers to make attractive deals on large purchases in recent months, small but substantive price increases from several major manufacturers, talk of more increases to come from others, and a general increase in demand fluctuating from 25% to 35% above the summertime low point.
At the same time, high copper prices and tariffs on imported copper strip and brass cups used to make bullet jackets and brass cases are driving up costs for U.S. manufacturers, and tariffs are also increasing costs on imported brands. In some countries tariff rates are so high that several major brands are likely to be pushed out of the U.S. commercial market due to depressed profit margins and an inability to absorb the added cost while remaining competitively priced.
Some products I’d advise stocking up on are 9mm FMJ, where profit margins are extremely low and rising copper prices and tariffs will likely be passed on as stockpiled materials are replenished. Also consider European-made metric and vintage WWI/WWII calibers made by S&B and Prvi Partizan that are not commonly produced by U.S. manufacturers — these are where price increases, or worse, supply shortages, are most likely. That said, the most likely outcome is a broad increase in costs for all calibers of ammunition.
Again, this is my opinion based on 24+ years in the industry. Change can be sudden or take much longer than expected; new circumstances can shift the market’s direction, and events in the ammo business can play out in strange ways—only time will tell. Still, I see it as highly unlikely that ammo prices will improve significantly from current levels, and there are many ways they can rise.
